I love reading nature non-fiction about individuals that do amazing things and had not read too many that involved the amazon river. Based on the reviews I thought this would be an amazing, inspirational read. About halfway through the book I realized that I could not stand the author/adventurer Ed. He is narcissistic and overly critical of everyone around him, even Cho who stuck by him during the entire journey. I would have liked to have read more description about the indigenous tribes and their culture, what the rain forest looked like, etc. Most of the time with these types of books there are wonderful descriptions by the author along with introspection and reflection on the wondrous world they have entered and it is inspirational. Not in this book. Most of the time the author talked about how he was depressed and seemed only happy when his British friends came to walk with him a few weeks. In the beginning the author spoke about how he did not think he could have a friendship with Cho because he was so different than him...what??? Isn't that the point of pushing outside of our limited world that we create and doing something like this? Don't even get me started on the fact his ex-girlfriend blogged for him, fund raised for him, bought supplies, supported him emotionally, and was there every step of the way, but in the end he could not commit? Uggg, what a user. The only reason I gave this 3 stars is because it is well written, I was certainly reading the thoughts of the author and there must be some redeeming qualities about him due to the amazing accomplishment. I read until the end hoping I would change my mind about him, but alas I did not.
